Puerto Rican Getaway

Baking Writing

As some of you many know, or well, I hope most of you. I’ve been in Puerto Rico for the last three weeks! So far, it’s been a very food-filled yet exhausting adventure. It also has been the longest I have gone without baking or cooking anything. To be honest, I’m starting to experience baking withdrawals. I am sure I will begin to hallucinate dancing cakes and cookies; all of which will be resentful towards me. Anyway, I’ll be here for the next six days and will not be able to post another recipe for at least a week. Nevertheless, I am here to show you guys some of the desserts I’ve been eating. II’ll make a separate post for actual food.

This beautiful cappuccino is made with Puerto Rican coffee and hazelnut flavoring. It was absolutely strong and delicious!  You can get these and so many other hot or cold coffee type beverages at the Cheesecake Shoppe in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Next is a Tres Leches dessert. You can find this dessert in most Puerto Rican bakeries, this particular one is from Papa Uii’s in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. It may be odd but you can also find variations of this dessert in Nutella and caramel.

In Puerto Rico it’s called a “Tornillo” or a “Garguelo”. It’s a puff pastry shaped like one of those twisty-nails. It’s filled with pastry cream and topped with powdered sugar. It’s heavenly. You can find this pastry in absolutely ever bakery in Puerto Rico.

The last one enchanting dessert I will be showing you iiiiiis…Tembleque! It’s a coconut dessert. It’s a creamy jelly-like dessert that is very popular during Christmas time. I didn’t have any this Christmas… However, I was lucky enough to have my wonderful mother-in-law make some for me.

I still have a couple of more days on the island and I will definitely eat some more wonderful treats. I’m sorry for the lack of posts and activity! I’ll be back cranking out recipes in no time.

  1. By the way, if I were hypothetically going to start a bitter restaurant, what kind of bitter foods could I use? I am not very good at finding bitter foods besides rhubarb, coffee and beer.
