Did You Know? Assumptions

This is a picture of my dog being adorable yet judgmental. He wants me to wake up. He knows I'm up, he hasn't assumed. He's aware.

“And if you insist on continuing to make assumptions about my character, I’ll advise you only this: assume you will always be wrong.”
Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me

I was navigating the Internet when I saw this lovely quotation. It made me think about assumptions and how much I dislike them. I don’t mean all assumptions are horrible I just don’t appreciate those riddled with malicious intent.

I’m not going to act like I’ve never assumed to know things I wasn’t absolutely certain of and let’s get real, I know I don’t know everything. I don’t mean to assume. These assumptions sometimes happen without much effort or control on my part. I’ll usually say things that’ll shock me because I know I’m not sure of my statement. I’ll then try to rectify my assumptions by looking for the proper information. It’s horrible because every single time I do it, I feel cruddy afterward.

Did you know?

Assuming to know things that you are not sure of will lead to misunderstandings. Specifically, assuming to know someone’s character is just as bad as judging his or her character. If you aren’t sure of something or someone, take the time to understand them. Do some research! You’ll be surprised at how wrong or right your assumptions were. Plus, it’s always good to learn new things. I love being pleasantly surprised. Plus, being wrong  and acknowledging it builds character. Think of yourself as character-building sponge soaking up all the character.
